The nonprofit Centra healthcare system is a point of pride for Central and Southside Virginians, and they’re happy to share their firsthand experiences in videos and articles at CentraHealth.com. But an even more impressive story resides in the objective data or “quality indicators” Centra posts on its website. These are the numbers used to measure, compare, and continuously improve the quality of care—a process that has been earning Centra awards and recognition.

Centra enjoys a reputation as one of the most advanced healthcare systems in the nation, ranking among the best in the country for quality, efficiency, safety, and technology.

Since its inception more than 24 years ago, the Lynchburg based nonprofit provider has expanded its services and facilities throughout Central and Southside Virginia.

Centra is comprised of three hospitals—Centra Lynchburg General and Centra Virginia Baptist hospitals in Lynchburg and Centra Southside Community Hospital in Farmville—as well as numerous specialty services and medical practices.

Excellent Care…Every Time
Centra’s numerous national awards and accolades highlight the health system’s dedication to providing excellent quality of care One top honor hinges on feedback from patients. Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital has received Press Ganey’s prestigious Summit Award for sustaining the highest levels of patient satisfaction over three consecutive years.

Centra’s leadership in technology allows nurses to focus on patient care, with excellent results. According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Centra nurses have achieved an elite status among their peers. Leadership in technology also works to improve safety. As one of the “most wired” health systems in the U.S., Centra is using information technology to enter doctor’s orders, safely provide medications with barcode technology, document test results, and review database analytics to improve care.

All of these efforts and more have garnered national recognition in several key areas of patient care:

• Centra Lynchburg General and Centra  Virginia Baptist hospitals are Magnet© facilities. A magnet hospital is one in which nurses deliver excellent patient outcomes. Fewer than 5 percent of hospitals nationwide have earned this designation.

• Centra has received the Beacon Award for critical care excellence and clinical excellence in intensive care units from the American Association of Critical-care Nurses.

• Centra was ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the safest hospitals in the country, placing it in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide.

• Centra has earned Premier CareScience’s Select Practice national award for superior patient outcomes in both quality and efficiency of acute care, placing it among the top 1 percent of hospitals in the country.

Comprehensive Cardiac Services
Centra’s physicians and surgeons specialize in advanced noninvasive, interventional, and surgical cardiovascular diagnostics and treatment.

• Centra Lynchburg General Hospital is ranked as one of the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country by Thomson Reuters.

• The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has awarded Centra its highest three-star rating for quality in cardiac surgery every year since its inception.

• Centra Lynchburg General Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s National Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers.

Cancer: Centered on Healing
The Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center brings physicians’ offices, radiation and chemotherapy treatment, patient education, and support services together in a patientand family-focused environment centered on healing.

• Centra Cancer Care Services earned Full Accreditation with Commendation as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program from the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer.

Throughout Life
The breadth of services Centra offers ensures lifelong access to award-winning care—from a healthy and happy experience at The Birth Center, to surgery using some of the most advanced techniques, to comprehensive daily rehabilitation. It’s a mission that also extends to in-home and long-term care settings.

• Centra Home Health has earned the HomeCare Elite award for five consecutive years and the Home Health Outstanding Achievement Award from the Virginia Health Quality Center.

• Centra Fairmont Crossing, Guggenheimer, and The Summit Health and Rehabilitation centers received the Quality Award Step I from the National Center for Assisted Living.

Projects Underway
The Centra Inn, a 24-room facility for patients and their loved ones, is slated to open in 2012. The inn will increase hospitality room offerings and ease logistical challenges for heart-surgery, chemotherapy, and intensive-care patients and their families.

Another new facility, Centra’s Pediatric Center will integrate pediatric medicine, pediatric nursing, and emergency medicine in a cheerful environment featuring the latest technology.

Walk–in & Family Care
In addition to Centra, Physicians Treatment Center and Central Virginia Family Physicians are among the other outstanding healthcare options available in the Lynchburg area. Physicians Treatment Center in Lynchburg treats walk-in and scheduled patients for a wide variety of medical conditions.

With 14 locations throughout the region, Central Virginia Family Physicians enjoys a reputation for compassionate family care, combined with a wide range of state-of-the-art medical technology. Family physicians see patients from birth through the senior years and are trained in specialties including: pediatrics, internal medicine, gynecology, geriatrics, psychiatry, minor surgery, orthopedics, and community medicine.

Comprehensive Orthopaedics
The Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia offers a team of highly skilled physicians and surgeons, as well as physiatrists, rheumatologists, and a primary care sports medicine physician. The comprehensive-care facility has an Osteoporosis Center and a Spine Center.

Multi-Specialty Eye Care
Central Virginia’s ophthalmology and optometry services include: Piedmont Eye Center: With six board-certified eye specialists, Piedmont is Lynchburg’s largest multi-specialty ophthalmology practice. Services include pediatric eye care, as well as advanced treatments for adults and seniors St. Clair Eye Care: Three convenient offices provide complete vision and eye-health examinations, along with full-service eyewear boutiques.

Exceptional Orthodontic Care
Central Virginia Orthodontic’s newest location features stateof-the-art technology in a home-like setting, including an X-box equipped game room. The patient-centered practice offers clear, metal, and Invisalign® braces. New techniques and appliances greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, and shorten treatment time. YMCA of Central Virginia: The Y provides three convenient locations in Lynchburg, making it easy for residents to maintain their exercise regimens. Both the Jamerson YMCA in Wyndhurst and the Downtown branch offer programs and facilities for all age groups. The new Y Express is an adults-only “mini” facility, featuring ample equipment and weights for on-the-go workouts.
